East 17 — Biography of an Iconic British Boy Band

East 17 are a British pop group formed in Walthamstow, East London in 1991. Named after the E17 postcode of their home neighbourhood, the group rose from a local songwriting partnership to become one of the defining pop acts of the 1990s — selling over 18 million records worldwide.

Formation

The original line-up was Tony Mortimer (songwriter, founder), Brian Harvey (lead vocals), John Hendy and Terry Coldwell. Signed to London Records in 1991, the group released their debut single “House of Love” in 1992 to instant chart success.

The Walthamstow Era (1992 – 1995)

Their debut album Walthamstow (1992) went triple platinum in the UK and spawned the hits “House of Love,” “Gold,” “Deep” and “Slow It Down.” The follow-up Steam (1994) hit #3 in the album chart and produced their biggest single of all time — the Christmas #1 “Stay Another Day,” which sold more than 800,000 copies in the UK alone.

Up All Night & International Reach

1995’s Up All Night pushed the group further into Europe and Asia. Singles “Thunder,” “Hold My Body Tight” and “Do U Still” cemented their reputation as a stadium-filling pop act.

Resurrection and Solo Years (1998 – 2010)

After Tony Mortimer left in 1997, the group released Resurrection as a four-piece, including the Top-2 single “If You Ever” with Gabrielle. The band took a long hiatus through the 2000s while members pursued solo projects.

Today

Founding member Terry Coldwell continues to lead the group, joined by Robbie Craig (since 2014) and Joe Livermore. The current line-up performs the full East 17 catalogue at festivals, clubs and private events across Europe and beyond — bringing that iconic 90s sound back to a new generation of fans.

Legacy

East 17 remain one of the most-streamed UK boy bands of the 90s, and “Stay Another Day” re-enters the UK Top 40 every December. Their fusion of pop, R&B and street-style attitude paved the way for every UK pop act that came after them.
